Sasha Black is a flash-photographer living and working in Philadelphia. Although her pieces are technically self-portraits, Black sees her body as merely a tool working in tandem with a flash to evoke an uncomfortable and otherworldly sensation. These images create an uncanny juxtaposition when the flash shines light on a setting which, without it, is incapable of inhabitance.

Black also incorporates digital collage as a tool to highlight absence and to underscore the disconnect between body and space. This technique creates a deliberate contrast between images that are manipulated through Photoshop and those that remain untouched, putting the onus on the viewer to decide if they trust or distrust, positioning Black as an unreliable narrator. Her body of work is one which transcends reality.
